I typically see children and young people aged 8–17 years for assessment and treatment.

Where a young person has already started treatment with me before the age of 18, I may continue to provide care beyond their 18th birthday, where this remains clinically appropriate and in their best interests.

I may also consider younger children on an individual basis, depending on their age, presentation and needs, and where the assessment and treatment required fall within my clinical expertise, experience and scope of practice.

The decision to accept a referral is always based on the individual circumstances and whether I am able to offer an appropriate and effective service.

Appointments are offered primarily face-to-face, as I believe an initial in-person meeting is important for building a good therapeutic relationship and understanding each young person fully.

Online appointments are available on Mondays and Thursdays, with online appointments on other days possible by request.

Following the initial face-to-face assessment, ongoing appointments may be offered online where requested and where this is clinically appropriate. Online appointments cannot always be guaranteed, as this will depend on the individual young person and their clinical needs.

I work with some, (AXA, WPA, Cygna and Vitality, among others), but not all private medical insurers.

If you have private medical insurance, please contact my PA before booking to check whether I can work with your insurer and whether your treatment is covered.

If I do not currently work with your insurer, it may still be worth contacting them, as some insurers allow you to pay for treatment upfront and then claim the cost back.

If you are considering self-funding your assessment, please ask my PA for the current self-pay fees before booking.

Please note that ADHD assessments and general mental health assessments have different fee structures. This reflects the different nature of the assessments, the information required and the clinical work involved in each type of assessment.

Please see 'Understanding ADHD & the Assessment Journey' in  'Advice for Parents' for details.

If you are using private medical insurance, contact your insurer first to check that your assessment and treatment are covered and what they require. This may include a GP referral or authorisation before an appointment can be arranged.

You can then contact the clinic using the contact details provided here or by emailing admin@mind-align.com and/or call 07933724883.

Please send as much relevant information as possible, including any previous assessments, reports or letters. Reviewing this information in advance is important to ensure that Dr McBrien is the right psychiatrist to meet your child or young person’s needs and that the clinic is able to offer the appropriate assessment and treatment.
